Charleston officer dies in off-duty motorcycle collision

Charleston police Sergeant Tony Person Jr. died early Saturday as a result of injuries he received in a traffic accident in North Charleston, according to department spokesman Charles Francis.

Based on an investigation, Person, 35, of Chemistry Drive, Ladson, was driving a motorcycle off-duty on Dorchester Road when a vehicle pulled into his path, Francis stated.

Person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Dorchester County Coroner’s office.

Francis said Person was most recently assigned to Patrol Team 4 in West Ashley, and also was a member of the department’s Explosive Device Unit.

Police Chief Greg Mullen said, “The department is in shock from the news about the death of Sergeant Tony Person. We are mourning the loss of a dedicated police officer, father and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone. Tony served the department and community with honor, dedication and humility.”
