Plane crashes in ocean in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) –A small plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the South Carolina shore Monday afternoon.

The Myrtle Beach Fire Department says it happened Monday afternoon near Springmaid Pier in Myrtle Beach.

Officials say a good samaritan pulled the pilot out of the plane and brought him to shore. The pilot was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

Witnesses say they’ve never seen anything like this happen this close to home.

“I walked outside and saw the plane in the water. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything well, been this close to something like this. Like he said, I hope the guy is okay. Glad somebody was here and saw it soon enough to be able to get the guy out before, I guess it could get any worse,” said witness Geoffrey Cash.

There is no word on why the plane went down and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
